- A giant, 300 foot freak pillar of fire known as a "dragon twist" sprang up near the Sumida River where many refugees were staying. Out of the 44,000 people there, only 300 survived.
- Bridges collapsed, killing people by the hundreds.
- Bands of Japanese killed as many as 6,000 Koreans because they thought the Koreans might take advantage of their chaotic state and try to take over.
- The fires took three days to extinguish and die out.
