When the earthquake hit, a tsunami formed and arrived at Yokohama 40 minutes after the initial jolt. Together, the earthquake and tsunami destroyed the villages and caused mudslides and fires. The majority of the houses were made of wood, so the few buildings that weren't swept away by the wave burned to the ground. The quake had ruptured water pipes, which prevented the fire department from helping with the flames. Because of this, 45% of Tokyo was destroyed by the fires. The buildings were crumbling messes, and few still stood. Bridges had collapsed, and the people felt that there was nowhere safe for them to go. The estimated amount of damage is 600 million dollars in current value. Yokohama and Tokyo were wrecked. Some say that the earthquake shaped Tokyo into what it now is today.
